Police said Sunday that Oscar-winning songwriter Joseph Brooks apparently committed suicide in his Manhattan home.
Brooks, 73, was found dead by a friend in his Upper East Side apartment on Sunday afternoon.
Investigators say Brooks was found with a plastic-dry cleaning bag around his head and a towel wrapped around his neck.
A suicide note was found, but as of Sunday evening police had not released its contents.
Brooks was awaiting trial for alleged sexual attacks on 13 women. He pleaded not guilty to charges of rape and sexual abuse.
Prosecutors say Brooks lured may of the women through an online advertisement for movie auditions.
Brooks had been facing up to 10 years in prison.
His 1977 song "You Light Up My Life" won a Grammy and an Academy Award.
Nicholas Brooks, the late songwriter's son, previously pleaded not guilty to murder charges, after his girlfriend, swimsuit designer Sylvie Cachay, was found dead in a SoHo hotel in December.
