Starting at midnight Tuesday, the eastbound Belt Parkway near the Mill Basin Bridge in Brooklyn will be closed during the overnight hours and repaved by the Department of Transportation.
The major roadway will be closed for five consecutive straight nights between Flatbush Avenue to Rockaway Parkway, from midnight to 5 a.m.
As the road's damage from severe winter weather is smoothed out, roadway message boards will warn drivers to a local detour route to get back on the Belt.
"It will definitely be a mess, because the Belt Parkway, if you don't come here, you've got to take Cross Island [Parkway] to Van Wyck [Expressway]," said a driver. "It's a mess. [Brooklyn-Queens Expressway], the BQE is a mess itself without any interruptions, so with this it's going to be crazy."
Despite the interruptions, many drivers told NY1 the Belt is in bad shape and long overdue for repairs.
"Horrible, like swiss cheese. The worst I've ever seen," said a driver.
"If they need to repair it, they need to repair it. The road is just terrible," said another.
"This road definitely needs to be fixed. Right now I'm having a problem with my front wheel because I hit a pothole or something like that," said a third.
DOT officials expect the work to be done by 7 a.m. Saturday.
