Cathie Black insists that Mayor Michael Bloomberg told her she was the first person to be offered the school’s chancellor position, despite a report in the New York Times today suggesting otherwise.

A New York Times article today says Harlem Children's Zone founder Geoffrey Canada was actually the mayor's top choice for the post, but that he turned it down.

During an appearance on "Good Day New York" this morning, Black said that was news to her.

"I have no idea who the mayor spoke to. I would assume that he did speak to other people. He's smart he wants to get their input,” said Black. “But what he said to me is, 'you're the first person I've offered this job to.’ That's all I can tell you. That's what he said."

Neither Canada nor a spokesman for the mayor would comment on the Times report.

Black's appointment has been met with strong criticism, and is the subject of several lawsuits which seek to block her from becoming schools chancellor.
