Long Island Rail Road riders can expect continued delays throughout the week as crews continue to repair cables damaged by an electrical fire Monday.

Things were smoother on Tuesday's evening commute with 66 percent of the trains running.

LIRR managers say the railroad will be operating at about 75 percent capacity for the Wednesday morning rush.

It will take several days for workers to replace and test the 200 cables damaged in the fire at Jamaica station.

"The good news is it's a very high vacation week so we already have lower ridership. Customers are finding seats and we've been able to minimize some of the inconveniences based on the fact it is a high vacation week, but it will take us a couple of days to get back to full service," said Long Island Rail Road President Helena Williams.

"What are you going to do? You know? It's giving me a chance to have a beer and some potato chips and hang out," said one LIRR passenger.

"It's understandable. Today we know what's going on, so if it's going to take us a little while it's not a problem. If you miss one train you can take the next one," said another.

LIRR officials say the switching system is getting a $56 million upgrade that will make it more efficient this autumn.

Meanwhile, a low-voltage issue Tuesday suspended Amtrak service for an hour between New York and Washington and Philadelphia and Harrisburg. It also halted all service on New Jersey Transit's Northeast Corridor line.

"I guess I'm kind of used to it, but it's definitely having a falling off on the ability to get those trains in and out there in a timely manner," said one NJ Transit rider.

"A little bit unpleasant, but not too bad," said another of his commute. "Most people were polite, and that's what made the difference."

"We were sitting at stations, and I got an extra hour of sleep," said a third.

It is unknown what specifically caused the power problem.
