On the day of his death, many fans gathered at Yankee Stadium in the Bronx to remember George Steinbrenner. NY1’s Roger Clark was there and filed the following report.
Yankee fans were shocked to hear the news about the passing of Yankees principal owner George Steinbrenner on Tuesday.
Fans praised “The Boss” for taking a struggling team and making them into champions again.
"He brought the New York Yankees back to greatness,” said one fan.
"The best owner anyone can ask for, for a team,” said another.
Steinbrenner was certainly a controversial figure during his time running the team. But fans say that made him a perfect fit for the pinstripers and the city.
"Just made for great fun in New York, that's all,” said a fan. “It was very good to have him here and all the controversy that's being in New York, that's part of New York."
"He wasn't afraid to make any decisions, hiring or firing, and he went out there and did something for the city of New York and that is what counts,” added a second.
"He did whatever it took for him to win,” agreed a third. “He really was a winner, and he didn't take no for an answer."
And that's the attitude that Yankee fans say they loved.
"A tough businessman, but he was a good owner that spent the money he needed to spend,” opined a fan. “And he did a good job, and I hope his sons follow in his footsteps."
"George, more than I think anyone else, is what made this place, and continuing the Yankee legacy," said another.
As the fan put it, while the old Yankee Stadium was the House that Ruth Built, the new Yankee Stadium is the House that George Built.
