Police are now investigating whether a series of attacks on Mexican immigrants on Staten Island should be considered hate crimes.

NY1 first reported on the incidences earlier this week.

In one incident on April 10th, police say a Mexican man was walking alone when he was attacked with a baseball bat by a group of men in Port Richmond, knocking him unconscious. And, this past Sunday, another Mexican man was hit with a bat near Port Richmond Avenue.

Originally, police said the attacks were not being investigated as hate crimes, but police sources say after seeing the station’s coverage, the NYPD Hate Crimes Unit decided to look into the cases.

The attacks followed the April 5th beating of Rodolfo Olmedo, 26, which was caught on surveillance tape.

Four men are facing charges of robbery, gang assault, and grand larceny. However, a grand jury did not bring hate crime charges.

Olmedo said he believes the attacks were racially motivated.

Police say the incidents do not appear to be connected. ClientIP:,, UserAgent: CCBot/2.0 ( Profile: TWCSAMLSP
