Chelsea Market is turning into even more of a culinary hot spot with two new additions. Zagat editor James Mulcahy filed the following report for NY1.
Today, we're visiting two new spots in Chelsea Market that are making this venue even more of a culinary draw.
About halfway into the market you'll find newly opened Mok Bar, which isn't your average ramen joint.
NYC has seen a boom of noodle shops opening around town, and this eatery stands out by incorporating Korean influences into this traditionally Japanese dish.
"My whole idea was to make traditional Korean flavors and soups, and make that into ramen. Our classic ramen here is based on bibimbap, and the flavors are all the flavors that you'd imagine bibimbap to be," says Mok Bar chef and owner Esther Choi.
The affordable offerings are packed with flavor, and must try dishes go beyond the ramen to include small plates, including a pork stuffed "ho cake" that takes its cues from traditional street food.
"The bulgogi ramen, which has been super popular right now—bulgogi is sliced rib-eye that's been marinated. It's almost like like Korean barbecue. So it's like basically Korean barbecue with ramen. I add three types of kimchi that are made in house and it tastes fantastic," Choi says.
Right next door you'll find Corkbuzz, an offshoot of Master sommelier Laura Maniec's 13th Street wine bar of the same name.
"This is a traditional wine bar that's like something you would find in Europe. It's all stand up - I think people will come in, have a glass of sherry, have a little bite to eat. It's really about just like more of a quick stop in rather than having a full dinner," Maniec says.
The vinos there are diverse and interesting. You're likely to find sips that you've never encountered before, at a reasonable price. The venue—which also offers bites—has its own entrance and keeps late hours, so now you can get your Chelsea Market fix until 1 a.m.
"One of the things that was important to us was to build our champagne campaign, which is a late night half-off all Champagne. So you can either exit and enter from 15th Street between Ninth and Tenth Avenue, or you can come in the front door through the concourse," Maniec says.
