A laundromat/restaurant has set up shop on the Lower East Side. Zagat’s James Mulcahy filed the following report.
The Wash House
44 East 1st Street
New York, NY 10003
Recently opened in the East Village, The Wash House is trying to make doing your laundry seem less like a chore. This may be the only venue in New York City where drop off service is joined by grilled cheese, coffee and beer.
"It's a drop off laundry service, so we take it for them and we weigh it and we bring it in the back and we have one of our guys do it. In the meantime they can chill, they can watch the game, they can watch the news, or have a coffee and have a glass of wine and enjoy a grilled cheese with a gourmet pickle on the side as well. They can wait for it to be done, go do errands or do what they need to do and hang out with us," says Wash House Manager Joe Bouvier.
Clothes are washed, dried and folded in a back room that offers same day service. In the summer you'll pass the machines as you head to a backyard garden.
"Right now, just me and my coworkers are doing laundry until we can get someone else to come over here to help us out," says Bouvier. "Women's clothing is very complex, I didn't realize how complex it was until I started folding it. I don't know if I should get into details, but I was like I don't even know if this goes on the legs or the torso, but and it takes a very long time to fold clothes, which is something I wasn't ready for."
The sandwiches here are the highlight - the menu features a variety of gourmet grilled cheeses.
This small and charming storefront has done the impossible and added a bit of fun, and a bit of flavor, to normally dreary laundry day.
