A popular Australian chain restaurant is expanding in New York City, selling every type of pie you can imagine. Zagat editor Kelly Dobkin filed the following report.
Already a successful chain in Australia, Pie Face now has three locations in New York City.
"We’re bringing a change. I think it's something different and unique," says Spiro Bellas, National Coffee Trainer. "Meat pies are not really widely available in New York. We've got fresh juice and we're doing a yogurt now and a couple of sandwiches. So now we're trying to bring something different."
The menu offers a variety of different mini- and semi-mini-pies whose faces indicate the type of filling inside — "C" for chicken, "V" for veggie and so on. The new Midtown location also offers a breakfast menu featuring quiches and breakfast pie.
"Basically we specialize in all sorts of pies. Our specialty is a meat pie like a chunky steak pie, traditional apple pies and cherry pies," Bellas says.
Pie Face is also known for its coffee program. The newest location features a self-serve coffee bar featuring coffees of different strengths as well as a full service espresso bar, specializing in Australian "flat whites."
"A 'flat white' is essentially a shot of espresso coffee, topped off with steamed, smooth, velvety milk, with a thin layer of foam," Bellas says. "It’s really a specialist coffee we drink back home in Australia."
Pie Face’s newest Manhattan location, on Seventh Avenue between 35th and 36th Streets, is its largest in New York City. It's open 24 hours and is the first to feature a seating area.
"It's a welcoming space, it's a warm space where we like to invite our customers to hang out and feel comfortable," says Bellas. "We’re using a lot of wooden paneling, just to give a warm, earthy and natural feel. Just like our products, there’s no artificial preservatives in our food. And that’s why we’re trying to connect the wooden feeling, the natural feeling with our food — it’s all natural."
