If you're looking to get back into shape this new year, starting out at home may be your best bet. NY1's Jill Urban filed the following report.
If your New Years resolution is to get in shape we’ve got some quick simple exercises that will jump start your January. No need for a gym, Self Magazine recently introduced some hot at home moves that will set your workout routine on fire.
"You can get into the best shape of your life in your living room," says Deputy Editor Meaghan Murphy. "You don’t need fancy equipment, yo don't need a gym membership – a set of weights, a 4x4 area in your living room and that’s it."
Murphy recently demonstrated moves created by celebrity trainer Jillian Michaels.
"The first move is a pendulum lunge. It's going to tone your butt and thighs. You are going to step forward into a lunge and pass a dumbbell through your legs and then come back up tp standing. It kind of reminds me of one of those fancy basketball drills where you are passing the ball through your legs," Murphy says.
The next is called the ape. This should be done for one minute. Crouch on the balls of your feet and place your hands shoulder width apart and jump from side to side. It will get your heart rate up while burning a ton of calories in a short time.
"So next is the single arm mountain climber which you will do for one minute. Start in the plank position – lunge one leg forward, extend one arm forward and then you will alternate switching knees and arms," Murphy explains.
This gets your heart rate up, burns calories, and sculpts your shoulders, your butt your thighs, and abs all all the same time. The bear kick is another full body booster.
"Start in all fours in a hovering position, your knees are off the ground – you're going to maintain that position with the abs nice and tight and then you're going to kick your leg through," Murphy says.
Next is the sumo touchdown.
"Start in wide sumo squat with your toes pointed to the sides. You're going to put your hands behind your head with your elbows out and then reach to the side working those obliques. This is going to give you those sexy cuts in your stomach," Murphy explains.
And last, another great ab firmer is called the caldron crunch.
"Start lying face up, with your knees bent, a weight in one hand. Then you are going to crunch up, reaching that arm up and then stirring the pot," Murphy says.
All of these exercises are done for a minute or less, offering high impact in a short time.
