A new workout method tries to melt away those pesky aches and pains so you can stay in shape. NY1's Jill Urban filed the following report.
For most people, aches and pains are a part of everyday life, but a new self-treatment technique is teaching people how to change that so we can remain pain-free. It's called the MELT Method.
"The MELT Method is a simple self-treatment technique to help people get out and stay out of chronic pain," says Sue Hitzmann, the creator of the MELT Method. "We use soft balls and rollers to hydrate connective tissue, which is the support structure of the body."
The MELT Method is a technique that simulates the therapeutic benefits of hands-on body work. NY1 stopped by a class at the JCC in Manhattan to see what it's all about. Here, participants move along balls or rollers to hit on certain points that stimulate and re-hydrate the connective tissue.
"Connective tissue provides the interface between your muscles and your bones, and when it's dehydrated, it starts to tack down, and it creates what we call barriers, or areas or adhesion or restriction, and it's painful," Hitzmann says. "So what we do is teach people how to find barriers, meet those areas of tenderness and create the fluid exchange, which is going to stimulate the cells and restore the fluid without so much pain.
The nice thing about the MELT Method is anyone can do it. It doesn't matter your age or fitness level because it's not a workout in the traditional sense. It's a method that helps restore the body so it works better.
Those who do it swear by it.
"At this point in my life, I wake up a little crotchety," says Shelley Cohen, a class participant. "I get on a roller, I start using the MELT Method, it really, I can almost feel my tissues getting re-hydrated, and I just feel better."
"I love MELT," says Ardean Cavalli, a class participant. "I started MELTing because I tore my rotator cuff and it was not healing. I started to MELT, bingo. It was like a miracle. Holy mackerel, my shoulder. Then my knees. I felt my knees are better. My back was better. Everything was better."
MELT classes are offered at gyms throughout the country, or you can learn how to do it at home. Hitzmann says it only takes 10 minutes to completely change the way your body feels.
