Disney World is putting their "Disney magic" to use in wristbands, as the park is offering a magic band for every member of the family. NY1's Valarie D'Elia filed the following report.
In the old days, "magic bands" were parade performances. Now, the name signifies a whole new way to experience your Walt Disney World vacation.
"We've been in test and adjust mode for probably the last 10 months," says Jim Macphee, senior vice president of Walt Disney World Parks. "We began in a very small group of our resort guests, really to try and tweak them and get it all situated. There's a lot of elements that come to life."
The patented magic bands, embedded with microchips, use radio frequencies to connect guests with their preferences and their credit card accounts.
"We get on the rides. We eat. We just about do everything," said one Disney World attendee. "And so far, they're working pretty good. We've had good luck with them, yeah. We really have. It's pretty convenient."
D'Elia: What do you like about the magic band?
Disney World attendee: I like how you can just get food anywhere.
D'Elia: And how does that work?
Disney World attendee: You just tap your band and then you enter a pin, and then you just eat the food.
At a recent media event, Disney guests I spoke with were unanimously gung-ho about the colorful bracelets. Apparently, gone are the early concerns about identity theft.
"I think the way they have it set up with the fingerprint identification, if you do lose it, it can't be used by somebody else," said one guest. "And I feel pretty secure."
Besides swiping yourself into your room, your magic band will also cut wait times with its FastPass+ capabilities.
