NY1's Valarie D'Elia filed the following report on several discounts and deals for those who want to hit the slopes in New York State.

Skiing can be an expensive sport, especially when you have a family in tow, but there are ways to save if you have flexibility with your dates.

To avoid crowds and high prices for both lift tickets and hotels, avoid school vacations and holidays such as Martin Luther King Jr. Day weekend. Midweek rates are usually the best deals.

The second of two Discover New York Ski Days takes place on Thursday, January 9. You can purchase vouchers for as low as $12 each for up to eight lift tickets at participating mountains based on availability.

To get your grammar school kids out on the slopes for the first time, New York State has a special for third and fourth graders called the "Free for Kids Passport," which offers free lift tickets with the purchase of an adult ticket. It requires parents to apply online and also comes with a $22 processing fee.

For newbie skiers of any age, January is Learn to Ski or Snowboard Month across the country, with participating New York state resorts offering reduced rate lessons for as low as $35.

As for accommodations, Ski Areas of New York is teaming up with hotels to offer special ski and stay weekends once a month for a third night free. Tack on a Thursday or Sunday night for free to a two-night weekend stay and get free lift tickets for that extra day.

Guests should contact the selected hotel directly and identify the promotion as "I SKI NY SKI and STAY" to learn the specific dates and make reservations.
