The latest "Travel With Val" piece has details on the upcoming Newport Jazz Festival in Rhode Island, and info on a special discount for a trip to the festival. NY1's Valarie D'Elia filed the following report.
The annual Newport Jazz Festival, coming up the first weekend of August, is situated in one of the prettiest places in the Northeast: Newport, Rhode Island, in the shadow of the Newport Bridge, on Narragansett Bay.
"To have the setting of this wonderful city by the sea with this world-class music event is just unparalleled, I think, anywhere in the world," says William Vareika of Newport Festivals Foundation Inc.
It all gets started on Friday night, August 2.
"The Tennis Hall Of Fame is the site of the opening night of the Newport Jazz Festival, which this year, will be August 2, with Natalie Cole performing," Vareika says.
On Saturday and Sunday the beat goes on over at the sprawling grounds of Fort Adams, a peninsula that juts out into the bay.
Three stages are set up, featuring various jazz.
"Your pass gets you into the property, and then you roam around," Vareika says. "People sit out on blankets, bring folding chairs."
Food is available at various stalls, along with refreshments, including those served at beer and wine gardens.
Newport is about a four-hour drive east of New York City. Amtrak lets you off about a half hour away in Kingston.
For day trips, buses leave at 5 a.m. directly from Lincoln Center on both Saturday and Sunday. $235 packages include the round-trip bus ride, a festival ticket and a food voucher.
A special $20 discount on the bus trip is available by visiting WBGO.org/Newport. Look for a special D'Elia's Deal drop-down box. Or, call 973-624-8880, ext. 269 and mention D'Elia's Deal. Remember, space is limited!
