Hilton Head, South Carolina is conveniently located between two of the south's most captivating cities, Savannah and Charleston, offering a surf-and-turf getaway.
On the surf side is Hilton Head, a barrier island that some call the "Long Island of the South". Granted, with 12 miles of beaches along the Atlantic Ocean, soaking up the sun is a no-brainer.
Much of Hilton Head is located behind gated communities, so once you check into your resort, hotel or home rental, you’re an instant insider.
However, there are several public beach access points if you are simply driving through for the day. From the hard-packed sand to the fairways, the Hilton Head area is home to 23 public and private golf courses, some hosting PGA events.
Beyond the greens, Hilton Head has many tennis courts and 60 miles of bicycle pathways, all draped under a canopy of Spanish moss.
In summer, cultural activities and concerts are in full gear as are high season rates. But there are a few ways to cut costs.
Sea Pines Resort has discounts on weekly stays with resort credits on golf, dining and activities. Kids under 12 eat for free.
The Palmetto Dunes Golf Stay & Play Package offers three nights in a two-bedroom villa with at least two rounds of golf per stay and two hours of tennis per day starting at $134 per person, per night.
