Heading down to Florida for spring training isn't just for baseball players. NY1's Valarie D'Elia filed the following report.

It's not always a day at the beach in Florida this time of the year, so here's how to keep your trip amazing. Today's lineup: The solitude of the surf versus the shrill of the stadium.

Deciding whether to go to the beach or the ballgame doesn't have to be a rivalry when visiting the New York Mets on their spring training turf in Port St. Lucie. And sometimes, you just can't guarantee a win or a warm day.

"It's freezing, I didn't need to leave Brooklyn to come to this weather at all," said one Mets fan.

Temperature aside, many fans enjoy extra innings of fun when exploring Florida's treasure coast.

"The beach is minutes away, and the golf courses, of course we enjoy the 18 hole golf courses," said one Mets fan.

"Duffy's sports bar is right down the road and there are two of them within a two mile radius," noted another Mets fan.

"We may go to the casino, we may go to the Bon Jovi concert later tonight, we may do some fishing tomorrow," added a third Mets fan.

Nearby Hutchinson Island is one of the few places in Florida where you can horseback ride on the beach.

If you've got a rookie on your roster, be a good manager and make sure you don't travel too late.

While the Mets offer official packages for hotel and tickets, they tend to sell out early, so be prepared to book a la carte.

Indeed, the best things in life are free.

"Just grab your glove and your ball, just come out here in the parking lot and play some baseball," suggested one young Mets fan.
