Barbie is helping bring out the technology side of Fashion Week. NY1's Adam Balkin filed the following report.
Playing with Barbie dolls? That’s how those looking to take a break from Fashion Week are getting their downtime? Well, at the Barbie and Council of Fashion Designers of America’s Inspiration Lounge, current and future fashionistas got to be among the first to try out Barbie Fashion Design Maker, a whole new setup that allows Barbie to become part of Fashion Week with a little help from technology.
"You can go create a beautiful outfit for Barbie and then you can print it out and then actually put it on Barbie. So this is taking technology for kids to a whole other level where they’re not only playing a game and creating something they actually can see it in the physical world as well which I think is such a fantastic and important thing these days," says Jesse Draper, host of "The Valley Girl Show."
As part of the $50 Barbie Design Maker kit, you get eight sheets of fabric-like paper onto which you can print your designs and then stick to Barbie for her to wear.
And while even just a few years ago Barbie would’ve been breaking new ground bringing technology to Fashion Week, today that’s not necessarily the case.
From Rebecca Minkoff showcasing a gold, Bluetooth notification bracelet to Opening Ceremony teaming with Intel on the bracelets that also alert you to important texts or phone calls.
"Because technology is in everything in all sorts of industries especially fashion that figured out how to use it to their advantage so it makes perfect sense. It’s becoming absolutely essential to integrate technology with fashion for sure," says Wendell Brown of Esquire Magazine.
The thing is about most wearable technology, whether it’s monitoring your fitness or alerting you to important emails, it’s meant to be worn every day to work properly. So the concern for skeptics, in the world of high fashion is there a ring or bracelet or watch or even a shirt that can breakthrough in a culture where wearing the same thing two days in a row is often considered almost criminal?
