Apple is all set to unveil what it’s calling the biggest iOS release ever: iOS 8, the next operating system for iPhones and iPads. NY1's Adam Balkin filed the following report.

No new iPhones or iPads were announced, though the ones you already have might soon feel like brand new devices.

At Apple’s big World Wide Developers Conference the tech giant unveiled, among other things, iOS 8.

Some of the features include a new swipe down, instant way to respond to notifications; double tap the home button for quicker access to your contacts and then contact those contacts from right up top there; a Healthkit for pulling in the data from all your health monitoring apps and then even notifying your doctor if your numbers are off; and typing gets an improvement with predictive typing.

“As you type, you get suggestions for the next words you might want to type and you can tap things out faster than ever before. It’s incredibly smart, so it’s context sensitive. For instance, in Messages, if someone asks you, ‘Do you want to go for dinner or a movie?,’ it’s gonna suggest dinner or a movie," says Apple's Craig Federighi.

It’ll also learn your tendencies based on who you’re communicating with to offer up more business-like suggestions for co-workers and more casual suggestions for friends. As predicted, Apple is also trying to turn your iPhone or iPad into something of a universal remote for controlling just about everything in your home.

“With HomeKit, you can group devices and changes into scenes. And then with Siri integration, you can say something like ‘get ready for bed’ and be assured that your garage door is closed, your door is locked, your thermostat is lower, and your lights are dimmed."

Apple also unveiled a new operating system for Mac computers, which’ll be called OS X Yosemite with a new look and a feature called Continuity for more easily sharing content among all of your Apple devices.

Both iOS 8 and OS X Yosemite will be available for download this fall. ClientIP:, UserAgent: CCBot/2.0 ( Profile: TWCSAMLSP
