Microsoft unveiled a new device it insists will end your need for a tablet and a laptop. NY1’s Adam Balkin takes a look at the new Surface Pro 3.

“Today we take the conflict away and I am absolutely sure of it,” said Microsoft’s Panos Panay.

The conflict of which Microsoft is speaking, whether to buy a tablet or a laptop or since there’s a good chance you’ve bought both, which to use for your daily tasks. Well, the tech giant insists that its new Surface Pro 3 can fully act as both equally well.

With a bit larger screen than the Surface Pro 2 it’s 12-inches, though a bit lighter and even thinner. But, some of the features that make it more lappable, a term Surface developers like to use, the new kickstand which used to have two settings now allows you to set it at any angle and the new Type Cover attaches to a magnet that spans the bottom of the entire device adding more stability. Plus, now has a Surface pen, which comes packed with a few tricks of its own.

“When you click it even if your device is off you have to know that you can write immediately. You can write your notes and the minute you click your pen they go right into the cloud. When they go into the cloud they go to every single device that’s in this room right now, every single device in your pocket, every single device in your laps, every single device in your hands,” said Panay.

So the verdict, can you in fact take your two devices and replace them with one Surface Pro 3?

“I think the new Surface Pro 3 comes closer but it still feels a little bit awkward on the lap I just had it sliding off a little bit and I’ve just got regular sized legs not little like mini legs or gigantic legs but the keyboard is still a real highlight it’s kinda a shame they don’t bundle that in the box with the actual tablet itself because it’s really the best ambassador the Surface Pro 3 has,” said CNET.com’s Dan Ackerman.

The Surface Pro 3 is on sale now starting at $800, that does include the Surface pen, does not include a keyboard cover.
