Microsoft unveiled it's successor the Xbox 360 Tuesday, called the Xbox One, which the company hopes will serve a wide variety of functions for users. NY1's Adam Balkin filed the following report.

Microsoft's successor to the Xbox 360, the Xbox One, seems to have one purpose: to be the one box under your TV you use for just about everything. And if developers have their way you'll control everything using your voice, if you'd like, starting from how you turn it on.

'"Xbox On', and it's that simple. Xbox One instantly recognizes me and gets me to my own personal home screen," said Yusuf Mehdi of Microsoft.

You'll be able to, in the air, grab and expand applications, sort of like how you do it on a tablet. And speaking of applications, you'll now be able to multitask with Snap Mode. For example, you can watch a game on ESPN and have your fantasy stats running alongside it.

And while we're on the subject of content, Microsoft is going to start producing some of what its own so-called "immersive" programming, beginning with a live-action Halo show being produced with help from Steven Spielberg.

All of this is designed to take advantage of the new hardware, which includes a new controller, with 40 upgrades, and a new Kinect system that developers say is much more responsive and capable than the current Kinect.

"In 2010, Kinect layered in an analog understanding of how you move," said Marc Whitten of Microsoft. "But in 2013, we've revolutionized this capability. There are more joints, and now, for the first time, understanding the slightest rotation of a wrist or shoulder. We understand your balance, the transfer of weight from one foot to another the energy of emotion. When you're exercising, it can read your heartbeat."

As for when the Xbox One will launch, Microsoft is only saying this year. Price hasn't been announced.

Microsoft kept reminding fans that it'll say more about the console in a few weeks at the E3 video game convention in Los Angeles. ClientIP:,, UserAgent: CCBot/2.0 ( Profile: TWCSAMLSP
