Homeowners affected by Hurricane Sandy may be in for a shock when they get their property tax assessments this month, but there are ways to make sure they can get accurate evaluations. NY1's Jill Urban filed the following report.
January is here, and that means homeowners will soon receive their property tax assessments, known as a Notice of Property Value. This home evaluation is used to calculate the taxes you pay for the coming year.
But if your home was destroyed or badly damaged during Hurricane Sandy, you may find your tax value to be way off.
"If you think you property, it wasn't assessed OK, call 311 and we will get it re-assessed," said City Councilman Domenic Recchia.
Recchia, who is also chair of the City Council Finance Committee, told residents not to panic. There is a process in place to help get your home reassessed by the Department of Finance.
Owners of properties that have been given a red tag will hear from the city for re-inspection in the coming weeks. If your home did not receive a red tag but still suffered severe damage, you need to make sure to report it to the department by February 1.
Once your home is reassessed, if you are still not satisfied with the new evaluation, you can appeal it, but you need to act fast.
"If you are still not happy after they reassess your property, then you can file an appeal with the tax commission," Recchia said. "But sometimes, what happens, people still did not hear from the Department of Finance and they wait and they miss the deadline to file the appeal with the tax commission. So my advice is to file it with the tax commission."
The deadline for the tax commission appeals for Hurricane Sandy victims is March 15.
Councilman Recchia and the Department of Finance will hold Hurricane Sandy-specific outreach events at the end if the month for affected owners. This will be an opportunity for people to learn about the appeal process and to have questions answered.
