Nominees for the 68th annual Tony Awards were announced Tuesday morning with the musical comedy "A Gentleman's Guide to Love and Murder" picking up the most nods including Best Musical and Best Actor in a Leading Role. NY1's Donna Karger filed the following report.

The 2014 Tony season got off to a rather starry start as Hugh Jackman, who's set to host the show for the fourth time this year, made a surprise appearance just before Jonathan Groff and Lucy Liu were about to read off the list of nominees.

And then when the nominations were revealed the new musical "A Gentleman's Guide to Love and Murder" got the most love with 10 nominations including Best Musical and Best Actor nods for two of its stars Jefferson Mays and Bryce Pinkham.

Joining 'Gentleman's Guide' on the list of nominees for Best Musical were "After Midnight," "Aladdin," and "Beautiful: the Carol King Musical."

A new rule would have allowed nominators to select five nominees in this category, but only four were chosen leaving several of this year's new musical offerings out of the race for this coveted prize that traditionally packs the most punch at the box office.

Five new plays did make the cut: James Lapine's "Act One," Robert Schenkkan's "All the Way," Harvey Fierstein's "Casa Valentina," Terrence McNally's "Mothers and Sons" and John Patrick Shanley's "Outside Mullingar."

For those keeping score, "Hedwig and the Angry Inch" came in second in terms of nominations earned with eight including Best Revival of a Musical and a nod for its star Neil Patrick Harris.

The other musical revival nominees are "Les Miserables" and "Violet."

Topping the list of nominations earned for plays, two productions, both Best Revival nominees, which each took home seven nods: The Shakespeare's Globe production of "Twelfth Night" and "The Glass Menagerie".

It's an extra special moment for the Tennessee Williams classic since this American masterpiece has never earned any Tony nominations before. The list of Best Play revivals is rounded out with "The Cripple of Inishmaan" and "A Raisin in the Sun."

The Tony Awards, hosted by Hugh Jackman, are set to handed out on Sunday, June 8 at Radio City Music Hall.
