The decision on whether a New York City child gets a flu shot will no longer solely be up to their parents.

Starting December 31, children between the ages of 6 months and 5 years will be required to get the vaccine.

The city Department of Health says the new rule is designed to cut the risk of infection in child care centers and preschools and follows similar rules in place in New Jersey and Connecticut.

The Center for Disease Control says more than 100 children nationwide died from flu complications during the last flu season.
