City health officials are turning to the popular Yelp review website to track outbreaks of food poisoning.
The city Department of Health is using special software to analyze nearly 300,000 restaurant reviews on Yelp.
Researchers looked for certain keywords like "sick" or "food poisoning."
Under a pilot program, the investigation turned up 16 food borne illnesses connected to three unnamed restaurants.
Inspectors say they later discovered food handling problems in all three locations.
Health officials tell the New York Times the use of social media sites like Yelp can help them reach victims of food poisoning faster and hopefully contain the problem.
