Broadway dimmed its lights Friday night in memory of Ruby Dee.
Dee is being remembered as not only a legend on the stage and screen, but also a civil rights activist.
President Barack Obama said she paved the way for generations of black actors and actresses and inspired African-American women across the country.
Her career spanned seven decades, with notable works such as "A Raisin in the Sun" and, more recently, "American Gangster."
Her family plans to hold a private funeral, with a public memorial at a later date.
Ruby Dee was 91 years old.
