Editta Sherman, the celebrity photographer dubbed the "The Duchess of Carnegie Hall," has died.

A friend says that Sherman passed away in her sleep on Friday at the age of 101.

Sherman gained notoriety not only for her portraits of musicians, actors and writers, but also for her 60-year stint residing in the apartments above Carnegie Hall.

She was forced to move in 2010 after a landlord/tenant battle, as the Carnegie Hall Corporation wanted to use the residential space for Carnegie's music education programs.
