The popular and prolific author Tom Clancy has died.

Publishing house Penguin Group said Clancy died Tuesday in his hometown of Baltimore.

Best known for books like "The Hunt for Red October" and "Patriot Games," Clancy wrote thrillers mainly based on military and government technology.

He received acclaim for writing with great technical accuracy.

"The Hunt for Red October," his first book, hit shelves in 1984 and was an instant publishing success.

The book's main character, CIA Agent Jack Ryan, spawned five Hollywood blockbusters, with the next one due out this Christmas.

Tom Clancy was 66 years old.
