New York rock icon Lou Reed is recovering from what his wife describes as a life-saving liver transplant.
Reed's wife, the performance artist Laurie Anderson, told the Times of London that Reed is regaining his strength after the operation in Cleveland in April.
The 71-year-old Reed was a co-founder of the 1960s rock group The Velvet Underground.
He also had a successful solo career despite his struggle with addiction to drugs and alcohol.
Anderson reportedly said they chose to have the operation in Cleveland instead of New York because she said hospitals here are "dysfunctional."
