Sherman Hemsley, best remembered as TV's George Jefferson, has died.

El Paso Police say Hemsley died in his Texas home Tuesday.

The cause of death is pending.

Hemsley got his start here in the City working with the Negro Ensemble Company before joining the cast of "All in the Family" in 1973.

However, it was the spin-off "The Jeffersons" that landed Hemsley his biggest role as the wise-cracking Mr. Jefferson.
