Ask Asa: Security Guard Training Fees

  • Text size: + -

If you are unemployed, you know it's a jobless jungle out there. To help you navigate the unemployment terrain, NY1's Employment reporter Asa Aarons has answers to some viewers' questions.

Ivan of New York writes:

Asa,

I want to be a security guard. Many of the companies I apply to ask for a one hundred dollar processing fee and then another five hundred to get the job. I feel like I'm buying a job. Can they do this?

We receive frequent complaints about security companies charging for processing, equipment and training. While it would be unfair to paint all of them with the same brush, it does seem like some are more interested in recruiting advance pay-trainees than actual employees. Not all the companies, but some of them.

Here's what you are up against Ivan. The Security Guard Act of 1992 calls for the training and registration of security guards at an approved training school. Generally speaking, security guards start with an eight hour pre-assignment training course prior to applying to the Department of State for a security guard registration card. And there are more regulations for armed guards and security specialists.

The costs can be as simple as an $18 fingerprint form to hundreds of dollars for training.
The bottom line is you need to know what is expected of you and how much it will cost before you sign up and spend any money.

Contact the division of licensing services by emailing them at licensing@dos.state.ny.us. You can also get answers to many of your licensing questions at the department of state website at www.dos.state.ny.us. Once there, you can find out about choosing the right security firm or school.
