NY1's weekly segment "Your Weekend Starts Now" shows entertaining picks for great things to do this weekend all around the city. NY1's Stephanie Simon filed the following report.
"Smash" Star Megan Hilty at Café Carlyle
Megan Hilty of the show "Smash" performs songs from the show as well as other jazz and theater standards. It's a family affair for Megan and her husband Brian Gallagher, who accompanies her on guitar. The two are expecting their first child. They're performing now through June 7. Tickets start at $50.
"Under My Skin"
Off Broadway at Little Shubert on West 42nd street, check out "Under My Skin." Kerry Butler and Matt Walton star in this heartfelt romantic comedy about about life, love, and health insurance! Tickets start at $47.
Daniel Gwirtzman Dance Company in "The Oracle"
At the Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM) Friday through Sunday, see the Daniel Gwirtzman Dance Company perform "The Oracle." It's presented in the round. There are also post show talk backs with the choreographer and members of the cast. Tickets start at $20.
Long Piano Duo in "Double Entendre"
Saturday night see the famed Long Piano Duo in "Double Entendre." It's an all French concert at The New York Society for Ethical Culture Concert Hall with the multicultural chamber orchestra Ensemble du Monde, led by Music Director Marlon Daniel. Tickets start at $35.
"Jaws" Plays Outdoors at the South Street Seaport
The South Steet Seaport offers a summer long schedule of programs and activities, including live music, a DJ series, outdoor films and more. This Saturday night it's the classic summer thriller "Jaws."
Bushwick Open Studios
Do not miss Bushwick Open Studios. This three-day arts and culture festival, organized by Arts in Bushwick (AiB), celebrates the local art scene. The festival runs May 30 through June 1, 2014. Open studios hours vary per artist, so check the directory, but most studios are open 12 p.m. through 7 p.m. on Saturday, May 31 and Sunday, June 1. It's free.
LIC Art Bus
The LIC Art Bus stops at the entrances of Socrates Sculpture Park, The Noguchi Museum, Sculpture Center, and MoMA PS1. It runs Saturday and Sunday afternoons, from now through September 14, from noon to 6 p.m. The bus holds 25 passengers, seated on a first come, first serve basis. Each museum is open until 6 p.m, Socrates Sculpture Park closes at sunset. (The 5:30 bus returns to Socrates for the final stop. Best of all, it's free.
3). It's a great time to visit Governors Island. Governors Island is open every day for visitors from May 24 through September 28. Enjoy 30 new acres of parks, plus arts, cultural and recreational programs. Operating hours are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday-Friday and 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Saturdays, Sundays and Labor Day. The Island will be open on July 4 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and is not open for fireworks viewing. To get there, take the ferry for $2 or for. Go online to see the ferry schedule and see what times are free and when to expect a $2 charge for anyone over 12 years old.
