NY1's weekly segment "Your Weekend Starts Now" shows entertaining picks for great things to do this weekend all around the city. NY1's Stephanie Simon filed the following report.
With the excitement of this week's Tony Award nominations, it's a great time to see a Broadway show. Theatergoers will be buzzing with delight over a great season on the Great White Way.
"Heathers: The Musical"
Of course there is lots of great theater off-Broadway, and if you grew up in the '80s like I did, then Dear Diary, you'll want to check out "Heathers: The Musical" at New World Stages. Great music and a great time with the dark, somewhat raunchy comedy. Tickets start at $50.
Lillias White at 54 Below
Tony and Emmy Award winner Lillias White makes her solo concert debut at 54 Below. Best known for her work on Broadway in "The Life," "Fela" and "Dreamgirls," White is performing Thursday through Saturday. Tickets start at $40.
"Midnight Moment" in Times Square
Also in the theater district, check out this month's Midnight Moment on the big screens in the heart of Times Square just before midnight each night. Media artist Leslie Thornton's Binocular Menagerie plays at 11:57 nightly.
Shen Wei Dance at Judson Memorial Church
For its spring season, this week at Judson Memorial Church, Shen Wei Dance is painting balloons to create a magical backdrop for its performances. Shen Wei will also perform solo. Tickets are $40.
Elisa Contemporary Art Structured Spaces
In Riverdale, Elisa Contemporary Art builds a unique exhibit with Structured Spaces, showcasing four contemporary artists who create architecturally driven works. The exhibit has just opened and it's up through July.
Film Retrospective on Ellen Burstyn at BAM
At BAM, see a film retrospective on actor Ellen Burstyn. Check out a different movie each night. Saturday night, after "Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore," there's a Q and A with Burstyn. Tickets are $15.
Suzanne Vega shows
Suzanne Vega has two shows this weekend. Friday night, see her at The Bell House in Brooklyn. Sunday, she plays City Winery in Manhattan.
Heather Reid at Rockwood Music Hall
Heather Reid, formally of The Murmurs, plays Rockwood Music Hall at 7 p.m. on Friday night. Stage One.
