The MTV Video Music Awards are coming to Barclays Center this Sunday, marking the first major awards show to be held in Brooklyn, and organizers expect the show to have a lot of surprises. NY1's Stephanie Simon filed the following report.
The 2013 MTV Video Music Awards are taking place at Barclays Center in Brooklyn on Sunday night.
Organizers gave NY1 a preview, including a look at the redesign of the iconic moon man, which was re-imagined by Brooklyn artist KAWS and stands 60-feet tall.
Q: There's always a lot of surprises at the VMAs. The only person we know for sure is going to take one home is you.
KAWS: As it should be. You know, I rounded him out a lot. I gave him a little skull and crossbones head. Yeah, I think I made him sort of festive for the occasion."
Who will else might bring home the award this year?
Competing for "Best Male Video" is Bruno Mars, Ed Sheeran, Justin Timberlake, Kendrick Lamar and Robin Thicke.
Competing for "Best Female Video" is Demi Lovato, Miley Cyrus, P!nk, Rihanna and Taylor Swift.
The top honor, the "Video of the Year" award, could go to Taylor Swift, Robin Thicke, Bruno Mars, Macklemore and Ryan Lewis, and Justin Timberlake.
As for the rumors surrounding an N'SYNC reunion at the VMAs, NY1 reached out to Justin Timberlake but has not received a comment so far.
NY1 also got a peak at the seat cards for everyone from Timberlake, One Direction and Drake to Lady Gaga and Katy Perry.
Veteran VMA producer Dave Sirulnick says Katy Perry is going to perform in a location live outside of Barclays Center. My guess is that it will be in a very iconic Brooklyn setting.
Sirulnick also commented on the possibility of appearances by N'SYNC or Jay-Z.
"There's different kind of surprises, right? There are the surprises that we know about, and we hope the audience at home is going, 'Oh, that was awesome! I didn't know that was going to happen!' Then there are the surprises that we don't even know about," Sirulnick says.
Expect plenty of both kinds of surprises Sunday night.
The VMAs are live from Barclays Center starting at 9 p.m.
