NY1's weekly segment "Your Weekend Starts Now" shows entertaining picks for great things to do this weekend all around the city. NY1's Stephanie Simon filed the following report.
"The Comedy of Errors" at the Delacorte Theater
Check out "The Public's Shakespeare in the Park" production of "The Comedy of Errors," which runs through June 30 at the Delacorte Theater in Central Park. It's performed by a cast that includes Jesse Tyler Ferguson, Hamish Linklater, and Emily Bergl. Tickets are always free and distributed on the day of each performance, though there is now a virtual line as well. Following the end of this show's run, a new musical version of "Love's Labour's Lost" will debut in late July.
Tales from the Jazz Age: An F. Scott Fitzgerald Songbook
35 East 76th St at Madison Avenue
Though the new film version of "The Great Gatsby" has a contemporary soundtrack, head to the Cafe Carlyle, located in the Carlyle Hotel, to hear music from the actual time period. Tales From The Jazz Age: An F. Scott Fitzgerald Songbook, featuring Emily Bergl, Matthew Salvidar and Molly Pope, is on Thursday and Friday beginning at 10:45 p.m. Admission starts at $25, plus a food and drink minimum.
Savion Glover at the Joyce Theater
219 West 19th Street, Manhattan
Savion Glover, the master of tap dance, is performing at the Joyce Theater in Chelsea now through July 6. Tickets start at $10.
Elisa Monte Dance and Jennifer Muller's The Works dance company join forces to present Monte/Muller MOVE! with Elisa Monte, with five different works, including two world premieres this weekend at New York Live Arts. Tickets start at $40.
Hi-Five/Jon B Free Concert at the Betsy Head Park
The City Parks Foundation presents '90s R&B group Hi-Five, along with Jon B, in a free concert on Thursday at the Betsy Head Park in Brownsville, Brooklyn. Showtime is at 7 p.m.
"I Stand Before You Naked" at the Penny Templeton Studio
On Saturday, check out the matinee of a special one woman version of "I Stand Before You Naked." Acting coach Penny Templeton was in the original cast of this Joyce Carol Oates drama in 1999, and recently got permission from Oates to adapt it into a one woman show for actor Jody Litman to star in. The theater is located on the second floor of the Penny Templeton Studio at 344 West 38th Street. Admission is free, but reservations are required. Punk Island at Pier 1 Staten Island
Punk music extravaganza "Punk Island" takes over Pier 1 on Staten Island all day Saturday. The festival runs from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Admission is free.
Free Classes At Ailey Extension
The Ailey Extension is promoting fun and fitness with 10 days of free classes on June 20 through June 29. Ailey is also one of nearly 40 dance studios offering free classes as part of NYC Dance Week, through June 29. For more information on NYC Dance Week, visit www.nycdanceweek.org.
