NY1's weekly segment "Your Weekend Starts Now" shows entertaining picks for great things to do this weekend all around the city. NY1's Frank DiLella filed the following report.
First up, China's celebrated female percussion group "The Red Poppy Ladies" make their North American debut with the musical "Mulan". Based on the classic Chinese tale about a young woman who disguises herself as a man to save her ailing father, "Mulan" is running at the Peter J. Sharp Theater now through January 13. Tickets start at $48.
Sandra Bernhard at Joe's Pub
Next, outspoken performer Sandra Bernhard will take up shop at the downtown hotspot Joe's Pub, starting on December 27. Expect to hear commentary by the artist along with music by her band, The Rebellious Jezebels. Bernhard is playing two shows nightly starting on the 27th and ending on the 31st.
Kwanzaa Celebration at the Apollo
Next, it's Kwanzaa at the Apollo! The annual winter celebration, which will take place on Friday night, will feature the New York-based Forces of Nature Dance Theatre along with appearances by Flute Visions and Queen God Is. Showtime is 7:30 p.m. and tickets start at $16.
Charles Busch at 54 Below
Next, playwright and drag queen extraordinaire Charles Busch makes his debut at the cabaret club 54 Below on Friday night. Patrons are warned in advance: "Expect laughter, music, tears, and sequins. But no boas!" The cover starts at $30 with a $25 food and drink minimum.
Celebrating Marvin Hamlisch at Avery Fisher Hall
And finally, ring in the new year with the music of the late legendary composer and true musical sensation Marvin Hamlisch. The New Year's Eve concert, which is set to take place at Avery Fisher Hall, will feature the likes of vocalists Audra McDonald, Josh Groban, Kelli O'Hara and others. Tickets start at $69.
