NY1 highlights the coolest and newest apps for your cell phone or mobile device in the twice-weekly segment "App Wrap." NY1's Adam Balkin filed the following report.
They’re all Adam Balkin and they, we, were created to give a little more personal touch to text messages. Intel’s Pocket Avatars is an app that uses your device’s microphone and camera to capture you—your voice and your expressions—inside one of dozens of avatars for you to then send off in messages to friends. You simply go to the catalog of avatars, and download as many as you’d like (some are free, others cost $0.99). Hit the record button, the camera will line you up, and then have at it for about ten seconds as proprietary facial gesture software translates what you are doing off screen into a cute little image on screen. You can then share your creations though the app or send a standard text message through the app and attach an avatar. Pocket Avatars is a free app for iOS and Android devices.
So, now that school is out how can you combine your child’s love for his or her mobile device with your desire for them to get outside and play? Welcome to scavenger hunts in the 21st century. This is Klikaklu. It allows you to set up a scavenger hunt. It can be inside one room or all over the country if you’d like. Snap a picture of what that person needs to find in the location they need to find it, the app uses gps too. You can throw in some clues, even offer prizes if and when they find it. Then, for the person playing, they simply pull up the clues and try to line up an image that pops up on their device with the image they’re supposed to find. Once they do, that task is automatically checked off the list. You can create scavenger hunts for friends or even just create them while you’re out and about for anyone to play, and by the same token, you can look for scavenger hunts that may have been created around you. Klikaklu is a free app for right now just for iOS devices.
