NY1 highlights the coolest and newest apps for your cell phone or mobile device in the twice-weekly segment "App Wrap." NY1's Adam Balkin filed the following report.
The holidays may be over, but there are still some gifts out there waiting for you.
12 Days of Gifts
Apple is helping those who found iOS devices under their trees or menorahs fill up those devices with some cool content for free via the "12 Days of Gifts" app.
It's pretty much what it sounds like. For 12 days - it started the day after Christmas, so from December 26 through January 6 - every morning at 12:01 a.m., you are offered something new for free. It could be an app, a movie, an eBook, or music, like the first day's selection of songs from Justin Timberlake. Whatever that item is, though, you have to download it within the 24 hours it's offered. Otherwise, you're out of luck. There's no going back and grabbing stuff you might've missed.
"12 Days of Gifts" is a free app for iOS devices.
Know My App
For those, or for the apps you're paying for, the CTIA, the nonprofit group that represents the wireless industry, has a new tool you may find interesting. "Know My App" is a website that's set up for you to learn how different apps use data so that you can take steps to reign in those that are eating up too much of your plan.
You look for an app you use, pull it up, and there, you'll see how big an impact percentage-wise that app has on your data plan, depending on which plan you have. It helps you see which apps really should just be saved for use inside Wi-Fi hotspots. Above the numbers, you'll also see how that app was tested, including how long it was used to get the results you're seeing.
Right now, the apps in there are the top 50, paid and free, from both Apple's App Store and Google Play. To check out your apps, head over to www.knowmyapp.org.
