NY1 highlights the coolest and newest apps for your cell phone or mobile device in the twice-weekly segment "App Wrap." NY1's Adam Balkin filed the following report.
Motorola Spotlight Story
Some hardcore techies at Motorola noticed something about their latest smartphone, the Moto X, a problem it says most smartphones have. They're getting better processors every year, which means they're getting more powerful every year, but aside from some of the most graphics-intensive games, so precious few apps even come close to taking advantage of all those advances in technology.
So, a division inside Motorola - and its parent company Google - decided to create something new, a new way of telling stories that would seize on the power of the device. That new creation is called Windy Day. It's the first so-called "Motorola Spotlight Story." It was developed with the help of some Pixar animators, and as you can probably tell, it's a story that's told in a world that is virtually all around you.
You move your phone around as if it's a looking glass into an entirely new world, point up to see the sky, down for the ground, while the action all focuses around a mouse and a red hat. If you choose to explore other areas, the story will kind of pause for you until you return back to the mouse.
The Motorola Spotlight Story app is right now available just on the Moto X. It's free and doesn't even require a trip to the Google Play store. It'll just appear on your device as a little red hat.
Talkboard by Citrix
Another one that'll probably have you shaking your head in disbelief if you think about what's happening here compared to how we would've had to have done something like this just a few years ago is "Talkboard by Citrix." It's a collaborative whiteboard.
Load it up on two, three, four tablets and all at once, from different corners of the globe if you'd like, you can all be drawing, marking up, altering a picture, a graph, a presentation, whatever at the same time. And as you can imagine, you have a whole host of colors and drawing tools at your disposal.
"Talkboard by Citrix" is a free app right now for iPads. Developers say they are also working on integrating voice chat into the system, though it is not available yet.
