NY1 highlights the coolest and newest apps for your cell phone or mobile device in the twice-weekly segment "App Wrap." NY1's Adam Balkin filed the following report.


Yes, there are lots of mobile apps designed to help you lose weight or get more exercise but many of them might just offer too many options or seem too intimidating to the technophile or fitness-phile. Human though strips it all down to the basics. Doctors, fitness experts, anyone who knows anything about the human body will likely recommend you get at least 30 minutes of some sort of exercise a day. So this app quite simply tracks just that, the Daily 30 as it's called in the app. You launch it and forget about it. Then, using GPS, it keeps track of all the movement throughout the day that you're doing outside. So, no, anything you do inside on say a treadmill won't count. All it wants is to get you to that Daily 30 and once you hit it, you get a push notification congratulating you. If you do want to drill down a bit you can to see your activity on a map, how long you exercised, plus how fast and far you traveled. This will track all sorts of movement: Running, walking, biking, rollerblading. Again, as long as it's outside. Human is a free app right now just for iOS devices though developers say an Android version is in the works.

Eat This Much

If it's the eating side of things that's adding to your waistline there's Eat This Much. You type in how many calories you want to eat per day or pull up this little tool to put in your size and weight loss goals and it'll figure it all out for you. Then just hit the generate button and every meal of your day is planned out for you. Hit the little blue circle of arrows to generate something different if you don't like that particular meal. Each entry also has a recipe page to tell you how to make it. And you can really tailor this to your needs. Under "meal options" you can choose a type of diet you're on, limit certain foods or ingredients like sodium, even type in about how much time you have each day to prepare that meal. Eat This Much is free to use to generate meals day by day or for seven dollars a month you can get meals planned for the whole week which also includes printable grocery lists.
