NY1 highlights the coolest and newest apps for your cellphone or mobile device in the twice-weekly segment "App Wrap." NY1's Adam Balkin filed the following report.
"Disney Animated" is the mother-load, must-have app for anyone who is a) a serious or even not-so-serious fan of Disney movies and/or b) an aspiring animator or someone who lives with one. "Disney Animated" is such a deep dive into the entire history of all 53 animated Disney films that it would probably take the better part of an hour to fill one in on everything available in the app.
Here are just some of the basic bullet points. The app starts off with a menu serving up every step of the animation process, with loads of highly visual examples.
Then on the bottom, a user can shoot straight to some of the even more hands-on sections. Perhaps the most impressive and addictive section, "Color Maps," shows shots from every single scene in every single Disney animation ever made, explorable entirely as thumbnails.
"Disney Animated" is an iPad-only app, and all that content will cost users in a couple ways. The price is $13.99, and it takes up almost two gigabytes of free storage, since the app is housed entirely on one's device
Another historical name in children's entertainment is trying something new via mobile device. The Jim Henson Company has just unveiled "Jim Henson's Chatter Zoo," its first app designed for preschoolers, children from about 18-42 months old.
Developers say it was made alongside language specialists and psychologists so that as children interact with the baby elephant, wallaby, cheetah and panda they are hearing and learning basic language and vocabulary lessons.
The little gamers are also introduced to social skills like taking responsibility or cause and effect, as they help virtually feed the animals, wash them, and through an interactive story, put them to bed.
"Chatter Zoo" is an iOS-only app for $1.99.
