NY1 highlights the coolest and newest apps for your cell phone or mobile device in the twice-weekly segment "App Wrap." NY1's Adam Balkin filed the following report.
Turbo Racing League
Don't let the cute snails and cartoony looking tracks fool you, the Turbo Racing League app is a serious racing game. Based on DreamWorks Animation's upcoming film, "Turbo" is hosting a "Shell Out" contest where, thanks to a Verizon wireless sponsorship, $1 million is up for grabs making this what is believed to be the largest cash prize to date for a mobile app. To compete for the money developers say players must achieve daily goals or collect enough of those tomatoes to gain access to the weekly contest. From now until July 7 the 10 fastest racers, one a week, will win cash prizes up to $25,000. Eight weekly first place finishers will then be invited to compete in the Grand Finale Race Event in Los Angeles for a shot at the $250,000 grand prize. And one of the nice things about Turbo Racing League, most mobile phone users can participate. It's a free app for iOS devices, Androids, and Windows phones.
Fast & Furious 6
If you're looking for a more realistic racing experience there's Fast & Furious 6 the mobile game. The game is less about hitting the accelerator and catching the corners just right, more about timing your taps. Hit the start just right, shift just as you're entering the red, draft as you're entering a turn and if course hit your nitrous at the optimal time to smoke your competition. The app does also weave a parallel story for you alongside the movie with the same name. Fast & Furious 6 is right now an iOS only app for free though an Android version is due out any day.
