NY1 highlights the coolest and newest apps for your cellphone or mobile device in the twice-weekly segment "App Wrap." NY1's Adam Balkin filed the following report.

For people who own a fitness band for tracking physical activity, there is a good chance their investment recently got a bit more valuable, if their band of choice is either a Nike FuelBand or Jawbone UP.

FuelBand owners now have greater ability to brag to your friends about how in shape they are getting. The FuelBand's "NikeFuel" app can now share with Facebook friends progress as well as photos of workouts. Users can also challenge their fellow FuelBand-wearing friends to fitness competitions, and the winners can win online bragging rights.

The NikeFuel app update is free and is for iOS devices.

Incidentally, consumers who are in the market for a $150 FuelBand may want to hold off a bit, as a "FuelBand2" successor with even more functionality is reportedly set to debut any day now.

Jawbone UP users will be glad to know developers have struck a whole bunch of deals that allow the data collect on that device to be imported and then used in a lot of other fitness apps, such as "RunKeeper" or "MapMyFitness" which keep track of workouts, "Sleepio" for sleep-specific advice or "LoseIt!" for setting weight loss goals. There are nine apps Jawbone UP now works with, and the UP app itself makes 10.

To link with one or a few of them, first get the free update for the UP app on an iOS device, then click over into the menu section and on apps. There will be a full list with instructions on how to link data.

Most of the apps are free, but some charge a fee. The Jawbone UP band itself costs $130. ClientIP:, UserAgent: CCBot/2.0 ( Profile: TWCSAMLSP
