NY1 highlights the coolest and newest apps for your cell phone or mobile device in the twice-weekly segment "App Wrap." NY1's Adam Balkin filed the following report.

This week's "App Wrap" features a couple of blasts from the past in the form of apps, especially if you count yourself among the Gen-X crowd or so.

The Doors

The first, The Doors, is a way to experience, remember, even learn some things you might not have known about the iconic band.

One of the big differences between this app and other similar-type apps on big-time musical groups is that this is a history compiled by someone who was there: the now octogenarian Jac Holzman, the man who started Elektra Records and is credited with finding and signing the Doors in the mid-'60s.

As you jump into the app, you'll see a menu across the bottom. First, you can click on a history of the band with plenty of stories and photos. There's also a timeline section that resembles an old car radio, where you move the dial forward to move time forward.

The multimedia section, of course, has plenty of pictures and videos of the band. But the treat here is, there's also cassette inserts and memorabilia, things like letters band members wrote, court documents and flyers for their shows.

Of course, all throughout, there is Doors music playing, bits that you can click on for links to buy them through iTunes.

The Doors is an iPad app for $4.99.

Fraggle Friends Forever

Another app, geared towards children, is one that parents may find themselves just as engrossed in. It's called Fraggle Friends Forever.

Launched on the 30th anniversary of Fraggle Rock, it's an interactive story. Remember The Doozers, those little construction workers who build towers that serve as food for the Fraggles? Well, they're being scared away by a Slurb stuck in their Great Hall, and it's up to Boober to save the day.

As you read through the book, you touch on characters and objects above the words to see some of the actions that you're reading. There are also some educational mini-games, including one that reinforces spelling and another that reinforces recycling.

Fraggle Friends Forever is an iOS app for $3.99.
