NY1 highlights the coolest and newest apps for your cell phone or mobile device in the twice-weekly segment “App Wrap.” NY1’s Adam Balkin filed the following report.

Clifford's BIG Birthday

You'd never know it from looking at him, but Clifford the Big Red Dog is turning 50 this year. In dog years that's like 350, and he doesn't have a single gray hair. Gamers can help him celebrate through the "Clifford's BIG Birthday" app.

Emily Elizabeth invites the user inside and first bake Clifford's cake. Then the user decorates the house, chooses which streamers to hang and which pictures of Clifford to display. When it looks just right, the user invites Clifford and starts to party with him.

There are a few mini-games like balloon popping and pinata, which let users do the fun poking part but then incorporate learning through activities like matching words with the objects.

"Clifford's BIG Birthday" app is available for iOS devices for 99 cents.

Light In The Sky

While kids may recognize the name "Pajanimals" from the preschool TV series, parents will likely recognize the Jim Henson Company, which is responsible for the show and the new "Light In The Sky" app based on the show.

"Light In The Sky" is an interactive episode where kids not only help advance the story through actions like finding friends hiding in a game of hide and seek, but every few pages there's a so-called "playtime" section where kids can touch just about anything on the screen to make it do something. Some of the playtimes encourage learning or help reinforce the story.

Speaking of the story, it's designed to help children who have a fear of the dark work through that fear so that they have an easier time getting to bed.

"Light In The Sky" is an iOS app for $4.99. ClientIP:, UserAgent: CCBot/2.0 ( Profile: TWCSAMLSP
