NY1 highlights the coolest and newest apps for your cell phone or mobile device in the twice-weekly segment “App Wrap.” NY1’s Adam Balkin filed the following report.

Mars Rover Landing

NASA is doing its best to use your technology to get you interested in its technology.

First, it recently released Mars Rover Landing, a free download for the Xbox 360 that allows users with the Kinect motion sensor to use their hands and bodies to navigate the so-called "seven minutes of terror" (the seven minutes it takes for the Mars Rover to break through the planet's atmosphere and slow down from around 13,000 miles per hour to about two miles per hour), all while doing the delicate dance of releasing parachutes, firing boosters and steering the rover towards where it's supposed to be on the red planet.

The game was created to help generate excitement for and help teach users about the Curiosity rover, which is scheduled to actually land on Mars on August 5.

"Mars Rover Landing" is a free download for the Xbox 360. You will need Kinect to play it.

Spacecraft 3D

"Spacecraft 3D" is an augmented reality app for mobile devices that allows you to virtually walk around and tinker around with a few of NASA spacecrafts.

Users print out a marker and point their device at it. Up pops one of two NASA vehicles. One is a rover that allows you to mess with one of the arms, raise some of the masts and have it do a 180 for you. The Grail spacecraft is more of a 3D model that allows you to walk around it and inspect its parts up close. There is also an information button to help tell you a bit more about what you're seeing.

Spacecraft 3D is a free app for iOS devices. ClientIP:, UserAgent: CCBot/2.0 ( Profile: TWCSAMLSP
