NY1 highlights the coolest and newest apps for your cell phone or mobile device in the twice-weekly segment “App Wrap.” NY1’s Adam Balkin filed the following report.

roadtrippers.com

It’s the peak of the summer which also means it’s the peak of road trip season. And while many travel books, apps and websites will suggest popular things people should see along the way, the couple behind the new web app roadtrippers.com wanted to help curate drives to show off the quirkier side of the country.

The app focuses primarily on off-the-beaten-path stuff, from the World's Largest Catsup Bottle to the bowling ball fence quite simply described as "a super large fence made out of bowling balls."

You just set your starting point and destination and how far off your route you're willing to travel, then check the sites you want to see (attractions, food, nature, entertainment) and up pops your map.

Click on sites for more info and then add them to the itinerary or even make reservations right there if necessary. As an added bonus, the site also calculates where the user will be traveling and about how much it'll cost in gas based on prices.

Roadtrippers.com is a free web app that's accessible via a computer or tablet. It is not currently available on phones.

outdoormovie.com

While on that trip or even just at home, people looking to take advantage of a warm summer night can use outdoormovie.com. Also a web app, it finds outdoor movie showings in the user’s area, most of which are free screenings.

Some things should be known about the site, though. First off, it was created by the manufacturers of Open Air Cinemas products, those big, blowup screens that movies are often shown on. This database is a list of movies being shown on its screens so don't expect this to help find you a drive-in.

Also, the listings are by state and tend to be focused around big cities at the moment. Having said that, it can certainly help find some free, summer entertainment.

Outdoormovie.com is also free and can be accessed through any computer or mobile browser.
