NY1 highlights the coolest and newest apps for your cell phone or mobile device in the twice-weekly segment “App Wrap.” NY1’s Adam Balkin filed the following report.

Flight App

Did you know that you are about 14 times more likely to die falling out of your own bed than you are in an airplane crash? It's statistics like those and explanations (lots and lots and lots of explanations) that anchor a new app designed to help you deal with your fear of flying. Called quite simply Flight App, it was created by the VALK Foundation, a Dutch research organization which claims it's the first scientifically-developed, web-based treatment for people who suffer from mild to moderate fear of flying. Launched with JFKIAT which runs terminal 4 at JFK airport, again it's primarily information, it explains how a plane flies, what turbulence is and why you shouldn't fear it. The app will also walk you through every step of the flight to detail every little sight or sound you might see or hear that could potentially startle you. It also walks you through some relaxation exercises and even has a panic button you can push in flight and voice comes on helping you to work through your fears. The Flight App is available for iOS and Android devices for $3.99.

Smart Traveler

And to help deal with more statistically realistic dangers once you land there's Smart Traveler put out by the State Department. It gives you all sorts of information on the country you're traveling to -- everything from travel warnings to traffic safety to children's and healthcare issues. It will also give you basic information about the country like its history and government. But perhaps most helpful, it will tell you where the nearest U.S. embassy is and how to contact it in case you do have an emergency abroad. Smart Traveler is a free app for iOS devices only though an Android version is said to be imminent. ClientIP:, UserAgent: CCBot/2.0 ( Profile: TWCSAMLSP
