The High Line now extends north to 30th street. Under the new extension is an urban playground of sorts, the Lot on Tap, with a collection of food trucks. CHOW.com Contributing Editor Alex Van Buren filed the following report.Hi, I’m Alex Van Buren of CHOW.com with this week’s New York CHOW Report, and this week we’re at an outdoor pop-up called the Lot on Tap, under the new extension of the High Line at 30th street and Tenth Avenue.
Tom Colicchio is responsible for this gathering of food trucks. He’s pulled together some I already really like, plus this new Coolhaus ice cream sandwich truck. Coolhaus is run by architect Natasha Case and her business partner — and fiancée — Freya Estreller. The name of the company is a pun on the architect Rem Koolhaas, and their logo actually looks like one of his buildings. Case and Estreller started up on the West Coast in 2009 and have been in New York since May. Their ice cream, of course, is what most interests me: I loved the bananas foster flavor, which you can get sandwiched between two double-chocolate cookies topped with flakes of sea salt.
This combo is dreamy because of that chocolate-dipped banana effect: The ice cream is made with bananas, sugar and cream, but there’s also rum, which gives it a really caramelized flavor. The cookies are a really deep chocolate spiked with Guinness, and the flakes of sea salt balance out the sweetness really nicely.
I like to come here, get a snack at one of the savory trucks and a pint of beer, and then grab a Coolhaus sandwich and head up to the High Line to catch the sunset. Just know that this place is becoming popular, and there might be a line to get in by around 7:30 or 8:00. But it’s worth stopping by before the space closes in the fall.
