The city meets the country at The Milk Pail orchard in Water Mill where all things apple are on the menu including apple cider donuts, hot apple cider and plenty of fresh apples. Brian Halweil of Edible East End magazine filed this report.

The Milk Pail is open year round, a great pit stop on Highway 27 for any weekend warriors.

"This time of year we have Fujis, which are nice and crispy and sweet," says owner Amy Halsey. "We have two right in the middle, Gold Rush and Pink Lady. And then our tart-flavored one would be the Braeburn."

"I believe this is our 42nd year now," says owner John Halsey. "We can offer many varieties the supermarket does not have space for. We grow 26 kinds of apples. Early in the season I prefer Zestar and then Gala. We've got a new one Cameo, which is a very nice apple. But overall the one I enjoy the most still is Jonagold."

While apples are now their bread and butter, the Halseys also grow pears, Asian pears, cherries and Jen Halsey’s famous peaches. The farm makes cider year round, which is served at local schools, as well as apple pies, muffins, apple sauce, and some addictive apple cider doughnuts.

Come May, just as the apples run out, visitors come to the picturesque orchard on Mecox Pond to watch the trees bloom and to stock up on flower and vegetable seedlings.
