1609...In the first recorded murder in the New York City area, John Colman – an Englishman who sailed into New York Harbor with Henry Hudson – gets into a fight with a group of Native Americans on Sandy Hook and is struck in the throat by an arrow. His grave on Sandy Hook is later re-named Colman's Point.
1876...Crooked politician William "Boss" Tweed lands in Spain after escaping from the Ludlow Street Jail, where he had been serving time for fraud. Tweed is later captured and dies in jail.
1975...Czech tennis star Martina Navrotilova, in New York for the U.S. Open, requests political asylum in the United States.
